Transgender Counseling
MFT“Transgender Americans live and work in communities in every state. Transgender Americans have families, work hard to earn a living, pay taxes, and serve their communities and country. Surveys estimate that between 0.3% and 0.5% of Americans identify as transgender. Applying these figures to the total number of adults in the United States, this research suggests that there are nearly one million transgender adults across the nation.” (“Understanding Issues Facing Transgender Americans,” 2015)
Transgender and non-binary people experience higher levels of discrimination in their lives, from interactions with family and friends to the challenges they face in school or when seeking employment. Lack of a comprehensive non-discrimination law means that they may be subject to higher levels of unemployment and thus be at a higher risk of poverty. Despite an increased awareness and acceptance among the general population, there is still a large element of society that does not understand or cannot accept the emergence of this community.
